[1] This fragment (or rather two joining fragments) of the early-2nd century AD was among the inscriptions acquired in Athens after 1801 by Lord Elgin (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). In 1747-8, before it was broken into two parts, it had been recorded at the house of the English consul in Athens by the physician and collector of books and manuscripts, Anthony Askew. Askew's transcription preserves a record of letters no longer legible in the break of the stone.

The inscription is one of four catalogues of ephebes (young men who undertook an official training programme) in the British Museum dating from the Roman imperial period (for the others see AIUK 4.3B no. 2, 4, 5). The other three all appear to derive from the official catalogue of the complete ephebic year class. This one, however, seems to have listed only some of the ephebes. Such partial lists commonly commemorated a circle of friends, or one of the teams into which the ephebes were organised for competitive purposes. As usual on ephebic catalogues, the Athenian citizens were listed first (marked out by the inclusion of their "demotics", i.e. place of residence, lines 1-15), followed by the non-citizen ephebes arranged in two columns side-by-side below (with no demotics, lines 16-25).
