[1] This stele was once owned by Howe Peter Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo (1788-1845), who excavated a number of sites in Athens in 1810. The Museum purchased the stele in 1982. It bears a simple relief of a lekythos (cf. on no. 44) with the female name Soteris inscribed to the left with her island ethnic. The Greeks of Sicily commonly called themselves "Sicilian" abroad in the fifth and fourth centuries BC, after which we usually see the addition of the city ethnic as well. The vase most probably contained a painted scene (cf. AIUK 6, no. 1). For more detailed discussion of the inscription see AIUK 4.6 (BM, Funerary Monuments), no. 38.
