[1] This marble loutrophoros was likely excavated by Lord Elgin's agent Lusieri south of Philopappos Hill (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). It is decorated with carved vertical flutes (or tongues) and a horizontal guilloche band around the shoulder. The inscription is carved across the flutes, one letter per flute; this type of vessel is not normally inscribed, presumably due to the lack of undecorated space. It is not certain in this case whether the lettering was added later, or (perhaps more likely) was original. On the loutrophoros form see on no. 46.
