Funerary monument of Ploutarchos
AIUK 4.6 (BM, Funerary Monuments) no. 77 Date: iv-v AD
This is the grave of the prudent (saophronos) Ploutarchos,
who came to Ausonia longing for toilsome renown (kudeos).
There, far away from his homeland he underwent a succession of labours,
although he was an only child dear to his own parents.
(5)But, despite his very eager desire, he did not fulfil his yearning,
for a Fate of an unkind death overtook him before that. (trans. Sironen, adapted)[1]
