[1] This inscription is known only from transcripts in early modern travellers' reports. The format and nature of the text indicate that it was a herm. The presence of a phallus between ll. 19 and 20 is inferred from the gap in the text, but is not certain. Its head may have been a portrait of the inscriber or of the ephebes' superintendent (kosmetes). It is unclear whether the text continued after l. 40. The text is a list of the ephebic friends of Epigonos of Kydathenaion. For these lists, see AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 5 and AIO Papers 12 sect. 1.2. Thirty-three ephebes are listed including the son of the superintendent (l. 30) and a future ephebic superintendent (l. 28), but most of them cannot be identified. The reference to the “fellow diners” is unique. They seem to be distinct from the other friends listed in ll. 27-40. The archon Lucius Vibullius Hipparchos was the maternal uncle and adoptive father of Herodes Atticus (see Byrne RCA, pp. 478-79). The superintendent Eukrates is not otherwise attested; for the nature of his role in the Roman period, see IG II² 3739 and AIO Papers 12 sect. 2.1. The trainer Ariston appears to be the grandson of the trainer of IG II² 1990 (61/62 AD), and was in office until around 112 AD, when he was succeeded by a fellow demesman and possible cousin (IG II² 2023). This kind of long tenure and family succession is typical of the ephebic staff of the second and third century AD. [2] The kestrophylax was a relatively low-ranking member of the ephebic staff who instructed the ephebes in the use of a special kind of sling. The position was often held by non-citizens and this seems to have been the case with Pythikos (see AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 6 and AIO Papers 12 sect. 2.2).
