city . . . when (the city of Argos?) despatched a force he[2] as general gave orders to the
(25) leader of the infantry and cavalry to make a demonstration
of the existing intimacy (oikeiotētos) and friendship of the Argives for the Athenian People; and after this despatch,
when it happened that those stationed there by . . . effected their withdrawal, [he arrived with] (30) the Argives and helped put the Athenian People safely in possession
of the Long Walls and the Piraeus . . . Aristomachos then has taken up and maintains
the love of honour (philotimian) for the People and is of good will to all Athenians and has continued to be mindful of the freedom
(35) of the People in the most effective way at every opportunity;
and when a war occurred involving the (Athenian) People and the
city of Argos against Alexander son of Krateros,
an opportunity arose for the Argives to make a truce
for themselves at minimal expense, and although
(40) Alexander was offering peace, he (Aristomachos) did not think that this should be, but
providing an additional fifty talents from his own funds
he made the peace common to both cities;
and in remaining matters he looks after in whatever way is possible
both the People collectively, and individually Athenians who arrive
(45) at Argos, and promises for the future
to maintain his good will; in order therefore . . . . . .
