[1] This marble plaque is part of a series of dedications by Athenian archons to Apollo Below the Long Rocks (Hypo Makrais). For details, see IG II³ 4 128. This was perhaps the central wreath of three, cf. IG II³ 4 130. [2] The father is probably Gaius Julius Nikanor, who is attested in an Augustan period statue base (IG II² 3785) and was himself probably the son of Areios Didymos of Alexandria, philosopher and friend of Augustus (PIR² A 1035). This Nikanor is distinct from Julius Nikanor "the New Homer and New Themistokles", a poet from Hierapolis in Syria (IG II² 1069). Cf. Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens (2003), 321.
