[1] The dedicant probably held the adult gymnasiarchy in its Hellenistic form as a public office (cf. IG II³ 4, 369) rather than the ephebic version of the Classical liturgy of the same description (cf. IG II³ 4, 336). [2] This loutron, "bath" or "wash-room", was probably a bathing area that formed part of a gymnasium. Such a room would contain one or more tubs, troughs or other types of water basins, where athletes could wash or bathe after using the strigil to scrape off oil and dirt. Such facilities were often donated by a gymnasiarch, who presided over the gymnasium and the education of the youths there. Notable parallels are a very similar inscription from the island Peparethos that also pertains to a gymnasium (IG XII 8, 642); the inventory of the gymnasium on Delos, which lists a loutron or bath with three lenoi, troughs (I Délos 1417, l. 147); and the gymnasium in Pergamon, where two such areas are attested. Loutrones are to be differentiated from the public baths, not specifically linked to gymnasia, balaneia, such as the baths of Isthmonikos, IG I³ 84, l. 37.
