Dedication by an ephebe

. . . ^[1] . . . , having been overseer of the [torch-race?], in the year that – was archon (dedicated this) to Hermes, in the trainership (paidotribountos) of Philios son of Philios (5) of Phrearrhioi, the assistant-trainership (hupopaidotribountos) of Apollonides son of Apollonides of Phrearrhioi.^[2]

[1] On the ephebic dedications of the Hellenistic period see IG II³ 4, 357 with n. 1. This base has a cutting in the top for insertion of a dedicatory torch, and would have been fixed to a wall (scil. of the gymnasium); cf. IG II³ 4, 375 and texts referenced there. This base was found between Kyrrhestou-Erechtheos and Adrianou Streets, to the west of the entrance to the archaeological site which seems to have been the location of the Diogeneion gymnasium. On dedications by lampadarchs see IG II³ 4, 371. [2] The trainer and his assistant are attested in office between 35/4 and 17/6 BC, cf. IG II³ 4, 391, 392, 393, 395.
