Apollophanes son of Euphemos,^[1] polemarch, having won the torch race, dedicated (this) to the gods in the stadium,^[2] in the trainership (paidotribountos) of Abaskantos.^[3]

[1] This Apollophanes, from the deme Sphettos, was an ephebe in 145/6 AD. Other inscriptions from this cohort include a dedication by an ephebic team led by Apollophanes (IG II³ 4, 419), an honorific herm for the superintendent (IG II² 3741), another honorific inscription (IG II² 2152+3395), and two ephebic catalogues (IG II² 2052, 2054). Apollophanes was also ephebic polemarch, one of the "cadet" offices held by ephebes from the late first century AD onwards. These were versions of the major adult offices of the city: archon, general, herald, basileus, polemarch, court presidents, cf. E. Perrin-Saminadayar in S. Follet ed., L’Hellénisme d’époque Romaine (2004), 87-103, at 100. In Perrin's analysis this represents the transformation of the ephebate into an archaising image of the city, less an "institution-miroir" (as Graindor had proposed), than an "institution-mémoire".
