[1] This fragmentary marble base is a fourth-century choregic dedication commemorating a victory in the dithyrambic competition at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes). It is ascribed to the City Dionysia rather than the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 475) because the estimated original length of this dedication would have provided enough space in l. 1 for only one tribe and the category (either men’s or boys’) in which the tribe was victorious. Although very fragmentary, it is possible that the sponsor (choregos) was Phanostratos of Phaleron, father of Demetrios of Phaleron (Davies, APF 3455). The sponsor’s demotic allows the restoration of the victorious tribe as Aiantis since his deme has to be part of the victorious tribe (cf. Ath. Pol. 56.3-4 and Knoepfler in REG 129, 2016, 217-236). The director may be Kinesias, son of Meles (Stephanis, Dionysiakoi Technitai 1988, no. 1406), a well-known dithyrambic poet in Classical Athens, mentioned in several literary sources (Pl. Gorg. 501e, Pherekr. Cheiron F 145 Kock, Ar. Birds 1370, Frogs 154, 1437).
