[1] The dedicatee is the Thracian king, Rhoemetalces III, who was Athenian archon in 36/7 AD (IG II² 2292, l. 27, IG II³ 4, 389 l. 2). On the lower part of this monument is the funerary inscription, IG II² 12679, on the back is IG II² 6041. Nothing is known about the dedicator, or about the context of his victory. [2] In this contest the competitor was required to pull the bull’s horns down to the ground (see L. Robert, Les gladiateurs dans l’orient grec, 1940, 318-19).
