[1] This is part of a series of inscriptions recording repairs to the Sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis by the priests of Asklepios in the first century BC (cf. IG II² 1046, IG II³ 4, 779, 781, 787). More extensive repairs are provided for by IG II² 1046 of 51/0 BC and are clearly indicated by archaeological evidence (M. Melfi, I santuari di Asclepio in Grecia, 2007, 358-64). IG II² 1944, a partial list of the priests of Asklepios, indicates that Sokrates served between 75/4 and 62/1 BC and the only date available in this period for a priest from Sokrates' tribe (Erechtheis), according to the the tribal cycle, is 63/2 BC (see S. B. Aleshire, Athenian Asklepieion, 1989, pp. 75-81, 372-73). Relatives are attested in the first century BC as tribal treasurers, market officials, and priests in Athens and on Delos (Aleshire, Asklepios at Athens, 1991, p. 189).

There were two water sources in the Asklepieion that might have been the object of Sokrates' work. One of these was a fountain house at the far western end of the sanctuary, which was present on the site already in the fifth century BC and is known from three inscribed boundary stones (IG I³ 1098; S. Koumanoudes Athenaion 5, 1876, p. 331 and 6, 1877, p. 374 n. 8). The other was an artificial grotto in the cliff-face of the Acropolis close to the temple, created around 300 BC (Melfi 323-24, 345-46). The stone is a triangular base, probably a recycled choregic monument (cf. IG II³ 4, 480).
