Dedication by a general to Aphrodite Euploia in the Piraeus

IG II³ 4 320 Date: ca. 98/7 BC

Argeios son of Argeios of Trikorynthos, having been general in charge of Piraeus, dedicated this to Aphrodite Euploia, for good fortune.^[1]

[1] Pausanias 1.1.3 reports that a sanctuary of Aphrodite Euploia (Aphrodite of the safe voyage) was built in the Piraeus by Konon after the battle of Knidos in 394 BC; Ammonios FGrH 361 F5 that Themistokles founded a sanctuary of Aphrodite in the Piraeus after the battle of Salamis. Another source refers to a sanctuary of Aphrodite on Eetoneia (see IG II² 1657). It is unclear whether these all refer to the same sanctuary or if there were two separate sanctuaries of Aphrodite in the Piraeus. The findspot of this inscription at the opposite end of the bay from Eetoneia supports the idea of a separate sanctuary of Aphrodite Euploia, but it may simply have been carried to this location when it was reused.
