Dedication by the Piraeus generals to Hermes Hegemonios, 97/6 BC

The generals in charge of Piraeus in the archonship of Herakleitos (97/6), having been crowned by the Council and the People, Eupolemos son of Zoilos of Paiania, Zenon son of Meniskos (5) of Erchia,^[1] Aristagoras son of Troilos of Piraeus, dedicated (this) to Hermes Hegemonios.^[2]

[1] This name is written over an erasure. [2] The generals performed an annual sacrifice to Hermes Hegemonios from at least the fourth century BC (Aristoph. Wealth 1159, with scholia; IG II² 1496, ll. 84-5, 115-6). In Ath. Pol. 61.1 there are two Piraeus generals, but this inscription and SEG 54.225, ll. 9-12 (2nd cent. BC) show that by this date there were three. There is a square hole in the upper surface for a votive.
