[1] The base consisted of a number of large rectangular blocks, two of which survive. Not enough of the monument survives to reconstruct the circumstances, but the letter forms are consistent with the period following the Persian Wars, and speculations have included that it was the base of the statue of Athena Promachos on the Acropolis, built to commemorate the battle of Marathon (Paus. 1.28.2, 9.4.1; cf. A. Raubitschek and G. Stevens, Hesperia 15, 1946, 107-14; J. A. Bundgaard, Parthenon and the Mycenaean City, 1976, 165-67), or of a dedication of the ropes with which Xerxes bridged the Hellespont (cf. Hdt. 9.121; H. A. Thompson and W. Dinsmoor in Χαριστήριον εἰς Α. Κ. Ὀρλάνδον (1965) 1.318 n. 4, 4.151-54).
