Decree of Aixone awarding honours for management of a festival

Kalli-es^[1] son of Leaios, Apollodoros son of Kalliades (5) took care well and with love of honour (philotimōs) of the festival (heortēs) for Hebe or Hera, the demesmen shall decide to praise them and crown each of them (10) with a gold crown of five hundred drachmas for their justice and love of honour (philotimias) towards the demesmen; and to inscribe this decree (15) on a stone stele and stand it . . .

[1] e.g. Kallikrates or Kallisthenes. On the deme Aixone and its inscriptions see Ackermann no. 1, with notes. This inscription, which was acquired from an inhabitant of Glyphada, was first published by A. P. Matthaiou, Horos 10-12, 1992-1998, 139-42 no. 2 (= SEG 46.154). From the location and the fact that the name Leaios (ll. 3-4) is attested only in Aixone (Agora XV 16, l. 10, list of men from Kekropis, first half of iv BC, and plausibly identifiable with the father of our honorand), it can be identified as a decree of Aixone. Letter forms and orthography combine with this prosopographical indication to suggest a date, ca. 330-320 BC. It honours at least three men for their management of a festival, most likely of Hebe (thus Matthaiou), whose name is of the right gender and fits the space at the beginning of l. 7. Four hieropoioi of the festival of Hebe are honoured by Aixone a few years later in the first part of IG II² 1199, and our honorands can also plausibly be identified as hieropoioi. The wording of our decree differs somewhat in detail from that one, however (e.g. it awards foliage crowns where in our decree the crowns are of gold), and Hera is a possible alternative restoration of the deity's name at the beginning of l. 7. Cult of Hera is attested in this region in CGRN 57, l. 12.
