[1] This rectangular marble base is a fourth-century choregic dedication commemorating a victory in the dithyrambic competition at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes). There is anathyrosis for attaching other blocks to the left and right. Because there are traces of two different lion-foot-shaped holes on the upper surface of the stone, P. Amandry in BCH 121, 1997, 446, and A. Matthaiou in Ritual, Finance, Politics, 1994, 183-88 proposed that this choregic monument originally bore at least two tripods. According to M. Korres, Arch. Delt. 35, 1980, B 1 [1988], 1-16, the base of the monument consisted of a total of eight blocks identical to this one, carrying three tripods in total. The length of the base might have been ca. 6.4 metres and the tripods may have exceeded four metres in height. The monument might have commemorated different victories by Kimon in the same year. The unknown speaker in Lys. 21.1-3 suggests that in the fifth century it was possible for the same person to become sponsor (choregos) of two choruses in the same year but in contests at different festivals. This speaker himself was sponsor for tragedy at the City Dionysia and for the men’s dithyramb at the Thargelia in 411/0 BC. In the next year, he became sponsor for military dancers at the Panathenaia (pyrrhichistai, cf. IG II³ 4, 433 with notes) and then sponsor for the men’s dithyramb at the City Dionysia. However, there is no fourth-century parallel. More likely perhaps, more blocks and tripods were added to the monument over time as Kimon himself or his sons won further victories (cf. IG II³ 4, 468, 531, and Pl. Gorg. 472a-b). Kimon is not otherwise identifiable.
