[1] On choregic dedications commemorating victories in competitions staged at deme festivals of Dionysos ("Rural Dionysia") see IG II³ 4, 498, with notes. This dedication is on a base, with cutting in the top for a statue (most likely of Dionysos), and, characteristically of choregic dedications from the demes, was made by a father and two sons. One of the sons, Kleostratos son of Timosthenes, is attested with the demotic of Aigilia, as the prytany secretary of 343/2 BC, IG II³ 1, 306, l. 35; 307, l. 2, and it has been attractively suggested that Timosthenes son of Meixonides should be identified with the Timosthenes of Aigilia who was the wealthy friend and partner of the banker Phormio, at [Dem.] 49.31-2 (372/1 BC, see IG and Csapo and Wilson). The implication is that this dedication relates to the Rural Dionysia of the south-west Attic deme of Aigilia (tribe Antiochis, bouleutic quota 6 in the 4th cent. BC, IG II³ 4, 81, 22-28). It is the only evidence for theatrical activity in that deme; and the original location of the inscription is not known (it was acquired from a farmer who lived in Kalyvia Kouvara in 1873, today's Kalyvia Thorikou, a considerable distance north and inland of the likely location of Aigilia = modern Phoinikia).
