[1] This small fragment of a "large block" was first edited by B. D. Meritt, Hesperia 3, 1934, p. 63 no. 54. The year was most likely the same as the prytany dedication, IG II³ 4, 75 (same secretary to the People and Council, referred to more normally there as "secretary of the Council and People"). For the date, ca. 340 BC, see the notes thereto with AIO Papers 9, p. 6. In that case this is unlikely itself to be a prytany dedication (at this period there was just one victorious prytany each year, see AIO Papers 9) and is perhaps from a list of the whole Council (on this type of inscription see AIO 2776, with notes).

The "assistant" (hyperetes), referred to with no patronymic or demotic, was apparently a public slave (on this category of slaves, see Oliver, Honours for a Public Slave, with notes). For this office in a list of the whole Council, see Agora XV 72, of 281/0 BC (where there was one for each prytany). It is unclear how this official related to the public slave, demosios, who was responsible for overseeing the state archive in the Metroon (Dem. 19.129, cf. J. Sickinger, Public Records and Archives, 1999, 144).
