[1] This is one of over a hundred surviving altars from Athens dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD), as saviour, founder, and Olympios, on which see Benjamin, Altars of Hadrian 7 with notes. There are traces of red paint in the letters. In line 1, there are traces of a smaller trial version of the text, mostly covered over by the final inscription.
