[1] The lower portion of the relief is preserved, showing the hooves and legs of a prancing horse. This suggests the restoration of the heading, “phyl[archs]”, commanders of the tribal contingents of cavalry. Five men are named, but the list may not be completely preserved. The script is Attic, datable to the later 5th century, and this monument is notable as the earliest reasonably firm attestation of the existence of these officers. It may commemorate a cavalry battle or a victory in the anthippasia competition, on which see IG II³ 4, 252, though later anthippasia monuments commemorate the victory of a single tribe.
