The people of the Athenians (erected this statue of) Gaius Julius, son of Gaius, Caesar, pontifex maximus and commander, and consul for the second time, the [common] benefactor of the Greeks,^[1] uninscribed space (5) [when the manager (epimelētou) of the island] was Agathostratos son of Dionysios of Pallene.^[2]

[1] This statue base was erected by the Athenians for Julius Caesar on Delos (for other Athenian statues of Julius Caesar, see IG II² 3222 with notes; for statues of Caesar's heir Augustus and his family on Delos, see I. Délos 1588 with notes). The formula seems to indicate a date in 48 BC, after his victory over Pompey Magnus at the Battle of Pharsalos on 9 August, but before his reappointment as dictator in October. It is possible that Caesar passed the island at this time in pursuit of Pompey, who had fled to Egypt (M. J. Payne, "ΑΡΕΤΑΣ ΕΝΕΚΕΝ: Honors to Romans and Italians in reek from 260 to 27 BC," PhD Michigan, 1984, 310). The base originally consisted of two blocks, but only the right-hand block survives. On top there are two small holes at left and a large hole and a long rectangular cutting at right for insertion of the statue. [2] After the Romans gave Delos to the Athenians in 167 BC, they sent out an Athenian citizen each year to manage the emporium and sanctuary. Agathostratos' father or son is honoured by SEG 24.217.
