[1] This funerary monument ("stele") for a woman named Arkesis was obtained by Thomas Legh in Athens in 1811-1812. It was set in its present location in the window bay of the library of Lyme Park in the context of the refurbishment of the House carried out under Legh's direction from 1814. The monument depicts Arkesis holding a baby, from which we may probably infer that she had died in childbirth. We can not be certain if the baby died also. The stele can be dated by the style of its sculpture and lettering to ca. 400-360 BC. For a fuller discussion of this monument see AIUK 5 (Lyme Park), no. 1.
