These four marble slabs were discovered in the theatre of the deme Euonymon (on which see AIO 2551 with notes; cf. IG II³ 4, 968). The slabs, upon which wooden seating was probably attached, were discovered in situ around the main seating area (koilon) facing the performance area (orkhestra), and constitute the earliest of two sets of seats of honour (proedria) discovered at the site, the other consisting of six uninscribed marble thrones. (On the layout of the theatre, and its chronology, see J. Paga, Hesperia 79, 2010, 363-5 (= SEG 60.37); Csapo and Wilson, 112-4). It is probable that the inscriptions originally formed a single text, though most of the slabs have been lost. The inscriptions, and hence the first phase of proedria were initially dated to the 5th cent. BC, on the grounds that the epsilon of ΑΝΑΘΕ[-] in slab b, stood for an eta, and hence was inscribed before the adoption of the Ionic script in official Athenian documents, in the archonship of Euklides in 403/2 BC. However, a resolution of ΑΝΑΘΕ[-] with an epsilon is perfectly plausible (see Textual Note). On the basis of letter forms, the inscription has been placed in the first half of the 4th cent. BC, though with little certainty (E. Tzachou-Alexandri in Docter and Moorman eds., Proceedings of the XVth International Congress of Classical Archaeology 1999, 91; H. R. Goette in Pöhlmann ed., Studien zur Bühnendichtung und zum Theaterbau der Antike 1995, 16; Csapo and Wilson, 115-16). Despite a large degree of uncertainty in the restoration of this inscription, it probably concerns the dedication of the proedria. [2] Auto[kles] might be identified with Autokles son of Strombichides, a member of one of Euonymon's most notable families and a prominent figure in Athenian politics (e.g. as an ambassador to the Spartans, Xen. Hell. 6.3.2) in the second quarter of the 4th cent. BC (Davies, APF no. 4386, 161-5). This identification is attractive in that it would make him a relative of Olympiodoros, the dedicator of IG II³ 4, 968 in the same theatre (On this family, see APF no. 4386, 161-5; Humphreys, Kinship, 815-6). However, two other men named Autokles are attested in Euonymon: Autokles son of Androkles, a councillor in 367/6 (Davies, APF no. 2728; Agora XV 14 l. 7), and Autokles son of Androkles, likely the grandson of the former, who manumitted a slave ca. 336/5-322/1 BC (Davies, APF no. 2729; Meyer, Metics, nos. 2-9 l. 557-8). These two men may or may not belong to the same family as Autokles son of Strombichides. Further, it is also possible that ΑΥΤΟ[-] resolves as a form of the personal pronoun αὐτός and therefore has nothing to do with any of these men named Autokles.
