[1] This fragmentary dedication was found built into the wall of a church in modern-day Marousi, identified as the ancient deme Athmonon, north-east of the city of Athens. It represents our only evidence for a theatrical festival in this deme, which clearly required the services of a pipe (aulos) player, and was organised by the local demarch (Csapo and Wilson). Palles [=SEG 51.193] considers a Rural Dionysia as the likely context for this dedication, though Csapo and Wilson raise the possibility that it may rather have been the Amarysia, a local festival held in honour of Artemis (on which see IG II² 1203, with notes). On dedications from the Rural Dionysia see IG II³ 4, 498, with notes. [2] Meidogenes may be the grandfather of another individual with that name from Athmonon, attested in an honorific decree dated to 282/1 BC (Agora XVI 181 l. 32-3).
