[1] From its findspot and triangular form (to carry a tripod, cf. P. Amandry, BCH 100, 1976, 25-26 figs. 9-11) it seems that this was a dedication to Apollo in the Pythion, perhaps by a board of epistatai responsible for the Thargelia (but A. Matthaiou, in A. Delivorrias et al. eds., Epainos Luigi Beschi, 2011, 269 argues that the findspot does not necessarily indicate a connection with the festival). This was the area in which most dedications by victorious sponsors (choregoi) of the dithyrambic competition at the Thargelia were found (cf. IG II³ 4, 475, with notes). [2] The sculptor Diotimos is known only from this monument.
