[1] This dedication was made by Athenian colonists before setting out to repopulate the recently captured city of Potidaia in Thrace in 430/29 BC (Thucydides 2.70.4; IG I³ 61, l. .27) or 429/8 (Diod. 12.46.7). The usual term for settlers is apoikoi (‘people away from home’), but here the rarer term, epoikoi (‘people coming to a home’), is used (as in Thuc. 2.70.4). The distinction seems to be akin to ‘emigrant’ and ‘immigrant,’ but they are often used interchangeably.
