[1] This is one of over fifty statue bases for the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) attested from Athens. It would have supported an over life-size statue, probably of bronze. The fact that Hadrian is named without any epithet might indicate a date earlier in his reign, perhaps at the time of his second visit to Greece in 125 AD. "The Greeks" are perhaps the members of the council which organised the Eleutheria festival at Plataia, who also honour Hadrian in Syll.³ 835a (D. Peppas Delmousou, Arch.
