[1] Textual note: Based on study of early travellers' reports and autopsy of the stone, Robert Pitt informs AIO that IG II² 3294 is an altar, not a statue base and is identical with SEG 44.167.

This is one of over a hundred surviving altars from Athens dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD), as saviour, founder, and Olympios, on which see Benjamin, Altars of Hadrian 7 with notes. This is the only example which names a dedicator, the city of Kyzikos in northwestern Asia Minor.

The dedicator of this altar, Kyzikos was located in the province of Asia on the Propontis. Hadrian had visited the city in 124 AD and funded restorations after an earthquake, the completion of the city's temple of Zeus, and promoted the city to "neokorate" status (cf. IG II² 3297). In return, the city founded a Hadrianeia festival and adopted the by-name "Hadriane" (M. Boatwright in Caballos and León, Italica MMCC, 1997, 127-130). The altar was found reused as part of a post-antique wall at Odos Erechtheos 11, at the north foot of the Acropolis (A. Choremi Archaiologikon Deltion 44, 1989, [1995] B 19-20).
