Pale of Kephallonia honours Hadrian

SEG 21.704b Date: ca. 132 AD

(This statue of) Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrian Augustus Olympios (was erected by) the city of the Palians on Kephallenia, (5) free and autonomous, through the manager (epimelētou) Arnophilos the son of Agathokles.^[1]

[1] This statue base is part of a group erected for Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) in the precinct of the Temple of Olympian Zeus by delegations from cities throughout the Roman Empire to celebrate Hadrian's consecration of the temple in 132 AD (see IG II² 3290 with notes). The dedicator of this statue, Pale, was one of the cities of the island of Kephallenia. Cassius Dio reports that Hadrian "gifted the whole of Kephallenia to the Athenians" (69.16.2), but Pale's appearance here as a free and autonomous city (cf. Pliny, Nat. Hist. 4.54) suggests that Hadrian's gift was more limited, perhaps a grant of the revenue from lands or taxes on the island (M. Boatwright, Hadrian and the Cities of the Roman Empire, 2000, 84).
