[1] This is one of several statue bases erected by the Athenians for Augustus and his family on Athenian-administered Delos. It was found in situ on its foundations inside the cella of the Temple of Apollo. It must post-date Augustus' assumption of the title pontifex maximus in 12 BC. In Rome, Augustus was not declared a god until after his death in 14 AD, but the Greek world did not feel the same compunction about declaring a living ruler divine, so it need not be posthumous.
