(This statue of) Tiberius Caesar Augustus (was erected by)^[1] [the Council] of the Areopagos and the Council of the Six Hundred and the [People, in the priesthood of Kleo] daughter [of Eukles] of Phlya, [the dedication] having been managed by Papius of Marathon, being priest for life. (5) Of Papius of Marathon.^[2]

[1] This large base formed part of a monument for the emperor Tiberius (r. 14 – 37 AD). There is anathyrosis on the left hand side for attachment to another block. On top, there is a channel running along the front and a dowel hole at right. It probably formed a pair with I Eleusis 335, erected for Tiberius' mother Livia after 14 AD. Rotroff, The Romanization of Athens, 1994, 161-82. [2] Kleo was priestess of Demeter and Kore at Eleusis from ca. 25 AD until ca. 65 AD (K. Clinton, Sacred Officials, 1974, 73-74). She also appears in the dating formula of I Eleusis 335 and 344, and as a dedicator in I Eleusis 341-343. Papius, whose name is abbreviated to "Papi" in this inscription for reasons unknown, is apparently a priest of Tiberius. He appears to be a Roman with a nomen but no cognomen, who had become an Athenian citizen; Rutilia Onesime (Agora XVII 224) may have been his wife (cf. Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens, 2003, 394-95). he was succeeded by Polycharmos of Marathon (I Eleusis 335).
