[1] Textual Note In presenting the text of this fragment in vol. 1 of I Eleusis Clinton restored it with stoich. 27-28 letters to the line as an honorific decree of the deme Eleusis, but in his commentary in vol. 2 he noted that the striking similarity of ll. 1-2 to ll. 6-7 of I Eleusis 67, suggested that it was rather a decree of Hippothontis, with the restoration of ll. 1-2 as follows: [ἔκρ]ι̣νε τ[ὴν Ἱπποθωντίδα φυλὴν νικᾶν Θαργ]|ή̣λια περὶ τ[. and that l. 7 "must be restored accordingly". This is persuasive. We have translated ll. 1-2 as restored by Clinton (but omitting the word Ἱπποθωντίδα, which is not included in this position in I Eleusis 67) and read ll. 5-7, καὶ σ̣[τεφανῶσαι - στεφ]|άνωι̣ [- ἕνεκα - τῆς] | ε̣ἰς τ̣[ὴν φυλὴν.

On the decrees of Hippothontis see I Eleusis 63, with notes. Like I Eleusis 67, this decree seems to have honoured a judge at the choral competition of the Thargelia for voting for a victory for Hippothontis.
