[1] This inscription appears on a column capital found at the Erechtheion. Part of the first line is missing and the text probably contained the name of the deity to whom this offering was made (most likely Athena). On the basis of letter forms and the design of the capital, it has been dated to the last quarter of the sixth century. The capital has been hollowed out to fit a plinth of a marble statue. There is also a hole at the bottom of the capital which was used to attach it to the supporting column. Raubitschek (Dedications, pp. 50-1, no. 49) attempted to link this capital with a column signed by the sculptor Eleutheros (IG I³ 790) and fragments of a statue plinth and the feet of a female Kore statue. Unfortunately the column is broken at the top preventing a certain match, while the Kore statue may be later in date than the capital and its fit with the capital is less exact than Raubitschek claimed (G. Donnay, Acta of the Fifth Epigraphic Congress 1967, 1971, 61-2). For a Kore statue dedicated by another urban craftsman, the potter Nearchos, see IG I³ 628. [2] The occupational term ‘the fuller’ (ho knapheus) appears to have been added later in the space between lines 1 and 3. It is possible that this addition was an afterthought.
