[1] This is a choregic dedication commemorating a victory in dithyrambic competitions at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes), or perhaps (if there were two victorious tribes) the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 475 with notes). Since the tribe name(s) cannot be reconstructed and the findspot does not help further, it is not possible to determine which festival the dedication relates to. Pantakles (Stephanis, Dionysiakoi Technitai 1988, no. 1992) was a well-known poet, mentioned in several literary sources (Eupolis PCG F 318; Ar. Frogs 1036-38; Antiphon 6.11; Aristotle Didaskaliai F 624 Rose) as well as on other choregic monuments (IG I³ 958, 959). See further the note to AIUK 2 (BSA) no. 3.
