[1] This kioniskos commemorates Hermon son of Athanippos, the only two individuals known at Athens from Sicilian Tyndaris. There are eleven other men at Athens attested with the spelling Athenippos, all Athenian citizens. The spelling “Athanippos” in this inscription reflects the Doric flavour of Sicilian Greek (cf. S. Mimbrera in O. Tribulato, Language and Linguistic Contact in Ancient Sicily, 2012, 233-50). The appearance of an island and polis ethnic for Sicilians is common abroad after the Classical period, see AIUK 4.6 (BM, funerary), no. 38 and J. Prag in P. Martzavou and N. Tyndaris was established by Dionysios I of Syracuse in the early 4^th century BC on the northeastern coast of Sicily and came under Roman control during the First Punic War (Diodorus Siculus 23.18).
