Athenian soldiers at Sounion honour their general, 219/8

Gods. In the archonship of Menekrates (219/18), Mounichion. The Athenian soldiers at Sounion decided: since Theomnestos, having been elected general (5) for the coast, was blameless in general and, alongside the existing sanctuaries, also furnished a temple and precinct of Asklepios, so that the soldiers at Sounion may also be seen to do what follows from Theomnestos’ (10) attitude (proairesei), with good fortune, the association (koinōi) of the soldiers [at Sounion] shall decide that the [management (epimeleian)] of the sanctuary shall . . . . . . taking . . . ^[1]

[1] This is a decree of the Athenian garrison at Sounion, honouring their general for the construction of a sanctuary of Asklepios. For other decrees of the garrison at Sounion see IG II³ 1260; for decrees of garrisons in general, see I Rhamnous 3, I Eleusis 182, and Oliver, War, Food, and Politics, 2007, 138-59. Theomnestos also dedicated IG II³ 4, 326, perhaps the building inscription for the new sanctuary of Asklepios (J. Riethmüller, Asklepios II, 2005, 38). It is otherwise attested by two inscribed dedications (IG II³ 4, 899-900), both now lost, fragments of a relief possibly depicting Asklepios, and some fragmentary architectural blocks. Most of these seem to have been found, like this stele, just inside the defensive wall of the garrison, near the western harbour, which may therefore have been the site of the sanctuary (H. R. Goette, Ὁ ἀξιόλογος δῆμος Σούνιον, 2000, 53; Riethmüller 2005, 38-41).
