[1] Like the somewhat more fully preserved I Rhamnous 57, this decree honoured a foreign mercenary leader (xenagos) and his soldiers. That decree was passed by the deme Rhamnous jointly with the other Athenian residents there, and the same probably applies to this one. The date of neither decree can be pinned down very precisely, and hence their context is obscure (defence of Attica during the Second Macedonian War? cf. IG II³ 1, 1238 and 1256, with notes); but both seem to be rather later than the decree honouring the military leader, Dionysios of Klazomenai, I Rhamnous 13, apparently passed by the deme alone, and which does not describe the honorand as xenagos.
