[1] This is one of at least ten temple inventories from the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis. For the others, see Aleshire, Asklepieion, 1. On the sanctuary in general, see IG II³ 4, 665 with notes. This inventory is a series of paradosis (hand-over) accounts, which were recorded as each annual priest handed over to his successor; each one appears to record all new dedications made in a given priesthood. The inventory begins abruptly partway through the account for 341/0 BC, indicating that the text began on another stone, now lost. The inventory concludes with the account for 329/8 BC. The accounts for each year are arranged by material: gold; silver; bronze, iron, and seal stones; clothing and wooden objects (with some irregularities). The whole set was inscribed in a single hand in 329/8 BC, perhaps as a result of reforms to religious finance undertaken in this period (cf. IG II³ 1, 445), and includes various supplementary notes on objects that have been lost, misplaced, or incorrectly recorded (ll. 1-3, 7-8, 24, 64, 66, Cf. IG II³ 1, 898, l. 123). The dedicators are a relatively even mixture of men and women, including some very prominent figures, but also many who are otherwise unknown. The dedications are primarily coins and metalware, many of them on tablets attached to the walls of the temple. Compared to the other substantially preserved inventories from the sanctuary – IG II³ 1, 898 (274/3 BC) and IG II³ 1, 1010 (248/7 BC) – there are relatively few small relief plaques and anatomical votives (Aleshire, Askelpieion, p. 42). The stone was re-used as a tomb cover in one of the early Christian churches on the site of the Asklepieion and the resulting water damage has rendered the lower part of the stele largely unreadable. [2] Diokles of Myrrhinous (l. 3) was priest in 340/39 BC (l. 9). IG II³ 4, 709 was also dedicated when he was priest, although it is not mentioned in this catalogue. Telesias (who recurs at l. 66) was priest in 336/5 BC and also dedicated IG II³ 4, 711 during his priesthood. [3] Polyxenos (l. 7) recurs at l. 18 as priest of 339/8 BC. [4] Eunikides (ll. 7-8) was probably the priest of 341/0 BC, whose account forms the first part of the surviving inscription. [5] Aristophon of Azenia (l. 13), who dedicated this silver phiale at around a hundred years of age (in thanks for his long life?), aided in the restoration of the democracy in 404/3 (Demosth. 20.148) and was politically active until his death in the 330s BC (cf. Davies Athenian Properties Families, 64-66). Six decrees proposed by him are preserved (including RO 39). [6] A kymbion (‘mug’) was a deep cup with no handles or foot (cf. Ath. Deip. 11.481d). [7] A karchesion (‘mast-head cup’) was narrower at the mid-section than at the base or the rim (cf. Ath. Deip. 11.474e). [8] A kados was a measure of volume, equivalent to 39.4 litres, generally used for measuring wine, so this vessel is probably a krater. [9] Hegesias of Sounion (l. 22) was treasurer of Athena in 349/8 BC (IG II³ 4, 28, l. 9; IG II² 1436, l. 7) and belonged to a wealthy family (Davies Athenian Properties Families, 209). [10] Unworked glass was stored as large lumps or ingots, which could weight several tonnes. [11] Polykritos of Mende, whose statue appears at ll. 28-29 and 64, was a noted physician and historian, active in Sicily in the late fourth century BC (FGrH 559). It appears that the oinochoe held by the statue and part of its gilding had become detached. [12] The priest Teisias (l. 29), who belonged to the tribe Akamantis^V, also appears in IG II³ 4, 710. [13] A kylichnis (‘round box’) was a small box used for ointments, incense, and cosmetics. It is probably the same as the object referred to by modern scholars as a pyxis (M. Milne, AJA 43, 1939, 247-54). [14] The sikya (‘cupping implement’) was a vessel used to create localised suction on the skin in order to treat various ailments (image from the Science Museum, London). [15] The list of dedications from 337/6 BC (unknown priest of Oineis^VI) appears to begin on l. 38. [16] The list of dedications from 336/5 (priest Telesias of Phlya^VII) begins on l. 45. [19] The oinochoe inscribed “of Athena” appears to be a public dedication for Athena; it is unclear what it is doing in the Asklepieion, instead of the Parthenon. [21] The list of dedications from 332/1 BC (priest Philipp-? of Erechtheis^I) appears to begin on l. 76. [22] The bladder (l. 84) might be an anatomical votive or a pouch made from an animal bladder. [23] Philon of Eleusis (l. 95) was a wealthy Athenian who served as syntrierarch ca. 350 and co-managed the construction of the Arsenal at Piraeus in the 330s (IG II² 1668, l. 3; Davies, Athenian Propertied Families, 555-56). [24] Malthake made several dedications in 331/0 and 329/8 BC (ll. 96, 110, 113). Four of them reappear in 274/3 BC (IG II³ 1, 898, ll. 67, 69, 83, 96) and one was among the dedications melted down in 215/4 BC (Aleshire, Asklepieion, 7, l. 14). [25] The list of dedications from 330/29 BC (unknown priest of Pandionis^III) appears to begin on l. 97. [26] Darics were Persian gold coins. Their presence among the dedications for 330/29 and 329/8 BC (ll. 97, 111) might be connected with the fall of the Persian Empire in these years.
