[1] This fifth-century monument may have commemorated a victory in dithyrambic competition at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes) or perhaps (if two tribes were restored) the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 475 with notes). It is known only from the work of the Italian humanist and antiquarian Cyriacus of Ancona, who recorded it in 1436 at an unknown location, perhaps on the Panathenaic Way between the Agora and the Acropolis (cf. E. W. Bodnar in Cyriacus of Ancona and Athens 1960, 40). The monument, however, was apparently noted much earlier by Demetrios of Phaleron, as reported by Plutarch, Arist. 1.3-6 (FGrH 228 F43). Demetrios identified the sponsor (choregos) with Aristeides "the Just" who set the original levels of tribute for the Delian League. This cannot be correct, since the director Archestratos (TGF no. 75; Stephanis, Dionysiakoi Technitai 1988, no. 437) was an active playwright towards the end of the fifth century. The sponsor should be rather identified with a descendant of the politician, possibly his grandson (see Davies, APF 1695 V). A. E. Raubitschek suggested on tenuous grounds that this inscription may be identical with a fragmentary late 5th century BC dedication, IG I³ 962. For criticism, see Oikonomides in AncW 3, 1980, 17-9 = SEG 30.124-5, who believes Cyriacus' text was part of the monument commemorating the victory of Kallias son of Telokles as gymnasiarch for Pandionis (IG I³ 969bis[b], cf. Davies, APF 7840).
