IG II² 3300 Date: ca. 132 AD

(This statue of) the greatest emperor Trajan Hadrian Olympios (was erected by) the mother-city of Ionia, (5) the city of the Milesians, for their founder (ktistēn) and benefactor,^[1] the erection being managed (epimelēthentōn) through the officials around Tiberius Julius Macer. (10) The sculptor Aulus Pantulius son of Gaius of Ephesos and Miletos made it.^[2]

[1] This inscription is known only from a report by traveller Cyriacus of Ancona, who saw it in 1436 in the Church of Agios Antonios (north of the Temple of Olympian Zeus). He calls it a ‘large column’, which might mean that it was a recycled column drum from the unfinished Peisistratid temple on the site (cf. IG II² 3299). It is part of a group erected in the precinct of the Temple of Olympian Zeus by delegations from cities throughout the Roman Empire to celebrate Hadrian's consecration of the temple in 132 AD (see IG II² 3290 with notes). The dedicator of this statue, Miletos, was one of the major cities of the Roman province of Asia. On its title of mother-city of the Ionians, see IG II² 3297 with notes. Hadrian visited Miletos in AD 129 (I Didyma 254) and acted as the city’s chief magistrate (I Didyma 306a) and as prophet of its sanctuary of Apollo Didymeus in 136/7 (I Didyma 494). He is honoured as a founder in many Milesian inscriptions (e.g. I Miletos 23, 292, 1327). Miletos is subsequently attested as a member of the Panhellenion (I Didyma 361, l. 5), on which see IG II³ 4 215 with notes. [2] This is probably the only one of the bases in the Temple of Olympian Zeus to name the sculptor, perhaps because of his connection to the honouring city (for another possible example, see IG II² 3295).
