[1] This altar was dedicated to the emperors Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius, who were (adoptive) brothers and co-regents from 161 to 169 AD. It was probably erected for Verus’ visit to Athens in 162 AD on his way to lead the Roman forces in his war against Parthia. For their epithet ‘brother-loving’ (philadelphoi) and for other altars dedicated to the pair, see Agora XVIII 315 with notes. It is identified as an altar because there are heavy mouldings around the top, but no cuttings for the insertion of dedications or statues (A. Raubitschek, Hesperia 35, 1966, 250).
