. . . managed well^[1] and with love of honour (philotimōs) the guarding of the fort and those living in it, doing what was beneficial for the deme and the citizens and others (5)living at Rhamnous, for good fortune, the Rhamnousians and those of the citizens living in Rhamnous shall decide, to praise Endios son of Aischeas of Aithalidai and crown him with with a foliage crown for his excellence and justice towards them; and inscribe this (10)decree on a stone stele . . . [1] Endios of Aithalidai, who held the office of manager (epimeletes) of the fortress of Rhamnous, to which he was appointed by the general, Apollodoros of Otryne, who was himself appointed by king Antigonos Gonatas, was also honoured in a decree of the isoteleis at Rhamnous, I Rhamnous 8 = Oetjen no. 48 (256/5 BC?), which principally honoured Apollodoros. According to ll. 7-8 of that decree the Athenian People had either appointed Apollodoros jointly with the king (κ]ατασταθεὶς στρατηγὸς ὑπό τε τοῦ βασιλέως Ἀντιγόνου καὶ | [ὑπὸ τοῦ δήμου καὶ] | χειροτονηθεὶς ἐπὶ τὴν χώραν τὴν παραλίαν, P. Paschidis, Between City and King 175-6, 514, 516-7, based on the restoration of A. P. Matthaiou, ap. S. V. Tracy, in O. Palagia and S. V. Tracy (eds.), The Macedonians in Athens 322-229 BC, 2003, 56 note 6 (SEG 58.154) or had elected him to the specific post of general for the coastal region (... [ὑπὸ τοῦ δήμου] | χειροτονηθεὶς ... Oetjen). The date was perhaps 256/5 BC (archon Antimachos, almost completely restored by Oetjen no. 48, l. 9, cf. Knoepfler, 57; Petrakos more prudently did not print the name of the archon in his text of I Rham. 8). This date coincides with the granting to the Athenians of a limited degree of additional freedom, following the period of direct rule by Antigonos consequent on Athens' defeat in the Chremonidean War.
