[1] This fragmentary inscription from a statue base preserves only the titles of its erector. He is probably Publius Aelius Themison also known as Pammenes of Azenia (S. Byrne, Roman Citizens, 28-29). His organisation of games in Asia (ll. 1-3) is known only from this inscription; it was not unusual for wealthy aristocrats of the second century AD to be active in Greece and Asia Minor. The priesthood of Hadrian Panhellenios seems to have been held ex officio by the archon of the Panhellenion, in which case Themison could have held this office in 177-181 or 181-185 AD. On the priest of the harmony (homonoia) of the Greeks, see Sardes et Synnada 2 with notes. The tribal eponymos funded the tribe’s sacrifices when it was in the prytany, several times (Agora XV 336, l. 7, SEG 28.167, l. 7, Agora XV 381, l. 3). He was also archon in 160/1 AD (Agora XV 363, l. 3; SEG 28.364), one of the parties who appealed to Marcus Aurelius regarding civic appointments in Athens in 174/5 (SEG 29.127, ii. 1, l. 50), and is called as “famous” on his son’s tombstone (IG II² 11627).
