The Areopagos Council and the Council of the 500 and the People (erected this statue of) Titus Flavius G[laukias] (5) of Acharnai.^[1] Glaukias’ son [bearing great repute (kudos) from his ancestors], once his mother Athen[ais’ hope, but now her woe], [having completed only one year] past seventeen,^[2] fate has taken you, [dearest of youths, into the Dark (Erebos)], (10) but a great city, [having been allotted the grief of your death], assigns immortal honours [with this image (tupōi)] uninscribed space (Work) of Antiphon.^[3] uninscribed space while the temple attendant (zakoreuontos) was – son of - ^[4]

[1] The honorand Glaukias was one of two brothers who died young within a short period in the reign of Hadrian. The other brother, Diophantos, who died slightly later, is commemorated by a matching base (IG II² 3963). Their grandfather, Glaukias, was a prominent rhetor and a friend of Plutarch (Mor. 628d-e, 635a, 714a-d, 741c-742d) For the date and the family of the honorand, see Follet in A. Billault, Mélanges Bompaire, 2001, 92-94. The base was originally erected in sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). [2] i.e. he died aged eighteen. [3] The poet Antiphon, who wrote the epigrams on both brothers' bases, also seems to be attested as a comic playwright and actor (I Thesp. 178, ll. 7, 22-25).
