[1] This is the earliest inscription from the healing sanctuary of the hero Amynos, whose name derives from Greek amynein (‘to ward off’). It was a small enclosure located to the west of the Acropolis, which seems to have been active from the 6th century BC through the Roman Imperial period (on the archaeology of the sanctuary, see J. Riethmüller, Asklepios, 2005, II 12-17). After 420/19 BC, Amynos was joined in the sanctuary by the newly introduced healing god, Asklepios, who had his main sanctuary on the south slope of the Acropolis, fairly nearby (see IG II³ 4, 665 with notes). In this inscription, the two deities almost seem to be equated, but all other inscriptions from the sanctuary show that they were kept distinct. IG II³ 4, 903-911 and Körte, Amynos 293-294 are further dedications from the sanctuary. SEG 26.135, IG II² 1253, and probably 1259 are decrees of the orgeones of Amynos, Asklepios, and Dexion, which managed this sanctuary and the unlocated sanctuary of Dexion (the posthumous cult of the tragedian Sophokles). The inscription is on the abacus of a square pillar, which has a hole on top for the insertion of a votive.
