[1] The findspot and text indicate that this base was originally dedicated in the Asklepieion at Zea in Piraeus, on which see IG I³ 1081 with notes. The dedicator, who is not otherwise attested, was presumably the sanctuary’s priest. On this priesthood see IG II² 47, with n. 4. It is notable that Phormion, like Euthydemos, the active priest from a prominent Eleusinian family of that inscription, was also a demesman of Eleusis. That, and the way the priest is referred to here (the common formula hiereus genomenos, "having become priest", is not used) tend to suggest that the priesthood was not a "democratic" annual one, but a life appointment, perhaps from an Eleusinian genos (cf. Lambert, Historia 59, 2010, 170). There is a square cutting on the upper surface for insertion of a statue.
