[1] This is a square cippus with a round opening at the top for depositing offerings. The inscription runs in a ring around this top lip. There is anathyrosis on all sides, indicating that the body was embedded within a larger stone structure, perhaps an altar, platform, or masonry floor. Several other objects related to Asklepios have been found in the Kerameikos and the north slope of the Kolonos Agoraios, which may indicate that there was an Asklepieion in the area, including the dedications IG II³ 1, 450, IG II³ 4, 877, the uninscribed votive plaques NAMA 1383, 1396, and NAMA 2373, and the statue fragment NAMA 704 (G. Despinis, Mitteilungen des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts: Athenische Abteilung 114, 1999, 211-217, who proposes to link it with the donation in IG II³ 4, 1768; cf. J. Riethmüller Asklepios II, 2015, 20-21). The Kerameikos also hosted the sanctuary of Ariste Kalliste, a healing shrine for women (IG II³ 1, 1028 with notes). Lucian, Scyth. claims that it contained a shrine of the hero Xenos Iatros (‘Foreign Doctor’), whom he identifies with the Scythian Toxaris; this may be fictional (Riethmüller 2015, 21-22).
