[1] This is one of a number of short inscriptions specifying offerings required, most but not all of them associated with the Asklepieia on the south slope of the Acropolis and in the Piraeus. See IG II² 4962, with notes, and for further discussion, CGRN 72. None of the inscriptions of this type can be securely dated, except in a general way by lettering and graphic features. We prefer to give a broad date range rather than follow IG's precise dating to the end of the 3rd cent. BC. In this case the use of -o for -ou in the gentive singular ending in l. 1 would normally indicate a 4th-century date, while the lettering of line 2 (e.g. the non-splayed sigma) might, but does not necessarily, suggest a later date. Koehler (IG) suggested the -o for -ou resulted from deliberate copying of an earlier style, but there are other possibilities, including that the two lines were inscribed at different times. Cf.
